What We Do

Restoring Our River

This multi-year effort involves removal of invasive trees and weeds accompanied by revegetation with native plants. The goal is to restore a diverse riparian zone where the ecosystem is healthy, recreation opportunities are enhanced, and agriculture irrigated by the Uncompahgre thrives.

RiversEdge West is bringing a crew to Montrose to remove Russian olives and Tamarisk, invasive species harmful to riparian health, with funding provided by the Colorado River District, Colorado Water Conservation Board, and City of Montrose. More could be accomplished with your contribution.

Donate

ForU is planting native trees and shrubs to demonstrate how a healthy riparian ecosystem looks and functions in Montrose. Donations are needed to purchase plants – contributing the cost of a single shrub or tree would make a difference.

  • Three-leaf Sumac $14
  • Golden Currant $14
  • Silver Buffaloberry $24
  • Fremont Cottonwood $16 – $35
  • Narrowleaf Cottonwood $16 – $35

River Caretakers

When we see problems, we work to resolve them by calling upon volunteers or City Park’s staff. Examples of what we have helped fix:

  • Trees down across the river interfering with safe passage
  • A large log blocking access to the takeout at Tavawach
  • A dirt/rock/tree slide that created a dangerous obstacle for boaters
  • Holes in a riverside trail caused by beavers.

River Guardians

As development of property along the river is proposed, ForU will scrutinize potential impacts on our river and work with the City of Montrose through the development review process and River Corridor Overlay Zone to protect our water quality, recreation access/amenities, and riparian health.

Cleanups and Trail Maintenance

We are fortunate to enjoy miles of trails in our river corridor and convenient river access via city-owned parcels and parks but keeping it beautiful and safe requires work. We help as needed with trail maintenance projects and cleanups, both in-river and along its banks. Become our friend and we’ll alert you about opportunities to help. You can make a difference.

And THANK YOU to the individuals, families, and businesses that care for the Uncompahgre River Trail through the Adopt-a-Trail program!
