(ForU)

Our Vision:
A healthy Uncompahgre River flowing through vibrant wetlands and trees as the heartbeat of our community where we live, work, play, learn, and connect with each other and the beauty of our surroundings.
The Uncompahgre River is a beautifully wild river that flows into Montrose near the Ute Indian Museum. Beginning from a lake at 12,215 feet elevation, it flows for about 75 miles until it joins the Gunnison River. The Unc not only provides our community with recreation – boating Class II+ whitewater, year-round fishing, a network of trails, and a renowned water sports park – but also with a majestic, natural presence that can add to our community’s wellness. A healthy river forms a healthy space for plants, animals, and for people to thrive. ForU is looking to activate Montrose to become a river-centric community where a healthy river and riparian corridor sustains a healthy community and economy.
Who We Are
Friends of the River Uncompahgre (ForU) is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) non-profit that works to preserve, protect, and restore the Uncompahgre River through Montrose while building our community’s connection to it.

Know Our River
From headwaters high in the San Juan mountains, the Uncompahgre River flows to the south end of Montrose near the Ute Indian Museum, then runs northward through the city, creating a greenway where nature and the community thrive.
